We have openings for more every-other week CSA shares!

Read on to sign up. . .

A CSA (community supported agriculture) is a way for community members to connect with farmers and local, fresh food through a weekly veggie box, or “farm share” of produce. CSA customers pay upfront (or in two installments) for their vegetables and then pick up a box every week or every other week throughout the season.

Our CSA will run from Mid-June through mid October (20 weeks)

Pick up will be Monday or Wednesday evenings (4:30-6pm) at City Sprouts Farm-- 2918 Birchwood Ave.

You may choose a weekly box (total of 20 weeks) or every other week (total of 10 weeks.)

We are offering one standard size box this year. If you are concerned a full share will be too much food, consider splitting it with a friend, or opting for an every other week pickup.

A typical CSA share will have 7-10 items in it, and each week will have a different selection of produce, maybe things you have never tried before! CSAs are a great way to embark on new culinary adventures.

A CSA box example could look like: 1 cucumber, 1 pint cherry tomatoes, 2 slicing tomatoes, 1 head lettuce,1 bunch beets, 2 onions, 1 bunch herbs, 2 zucchini.

 In the early part of the season (June-Mid July) there may be fewer items in your box (get ready for greens!!), and in the peak season we will make up for that by loading you up with all the bounty of the harvest.

This year we are excited to be offering a CSA on a sliding scale. We are trying to do our part to create a more economically inclusive food system. That means we’ll ask you to do some active participation to decide what your CSA share cost will be. We hope that a sliding scale will enable more members of our community to participate in the CSA while also ensuring fair compensation for the farmers. The scale is based on income and what percentage your household income is in relation to median income in Bellingham. We understand that there are factors outside of income that would determine your cost so we encourage you to consider what is reasonable for you or your family considering factors outside of income as well. Okay, here are the steps:

  1. See where you are on the sliding scale:

  2. Consider a few factors outside of income. The following is borrowed from Zenger Farm’s sliding scale model. These considerations are important because there are many factors outside of income that affect certain groups of people. Take into consideration these outside factors when deciding what your cost will be.

Consider contributing more when you:

  • own your home

  • have retirement accounts, investments, or inherited money;

  • have access to family money and resources in times of need;

  • have significant discretionary expenses like travel, dining out, entertainment, etc.

  • have a relatively high degree of earning power due to your education level (or other privileges you may have associated with race, gender, citizenship status, class background, sexual orientation, gender identity, physical ability, etc.

Consider contributing less when you:

  • are supporting more children, other dependents, or sending remittances,

  •  have significant debt

  • have medical expenses not covered by insurance,

  • are on a fixed income, such as senior citizens,

  • are impacted by state violence (e.g. refugees, asylees and injustice in our criminal system)

  3. Decide what price works for you and let us know!  You'll need to decide:

     a.  Do you want a box weekly or every other week?

     b.  Do you want to pay in full at the beginning of the season (preferred by the farmers) OR would you rather pay in two installments? Half now and half on July 1st.

     c.  Would you like to pick up on Mondays or Wednesdays?

At that time we will send you an invoice. Checks, debit and credit accepted. If you’d like to pay with EBT, let us know and we will work out a payment schedule for you. Feel free to contact us with any questions.

COVID-19 Update

We want you to know we are taking the impact of covid-19 into account and are going full steam ahead with our CSA this season. We will be taking all the necessary precautions, washing and sanitizing our hands before touching any produce, wearing glover, and never handling food if we are feeling unwell.

We are taking the extra precaution of pre-packing your CSA shares into paper bags for you to pick up, rather than reusing boxes or setting up the CSA market-style.

These are undeniably chaotic times; the vulnerability of our globalized economic (and food!) system has been exposed, and now is a time we need to look to our neighbors and the land we call home for nourishment and resilience.

It is more important than ever to be supporting local economies, and it is our honor to be growing food for you all.
